Day by day, our hearts are filled with different kinds of thoughts, which may affect our mindset and defile our hearts because we are always conscious of the thoughts that fill our hearts. It might shift our attention from purifying our hearts and the things that keep us spiritually clean for God.
Maintaining a pure heart can be difficult and take us time to work on, but I encourage you to take a step toward having a right heart with the Lord.

According to Merriam-Webster, a pure heart is free of flaws, pollution, and immoral behaviour—a heart with no stains or impurities. When dealing with a pure heart, the dictionary meaning is not enough. The Biblical meaning will give us an idea of what it means to have a clean heart. It will tell us what to consider when looking at a clean heart and how to grow our hearts into purity.
What Does the Bible Say About a Clean Heart?
The entire Bible defines and reveals many things to us from God. It tells us God’s intent toward man and gives a perfect example of whom to imitate. We would love to define a pure heart from the biblical perspective.
A pure heart is a heart that sees God, rejoices, loves, has faith, is sprinkled from an evil conscience, and is washed with the precious blood of Jesus.
Having a purified heart relates to our acquaintance with the Lord, and the Bible clamours for more of it, leading us to the giver, God.
Reasons to Have a True Heart
- Man’s Heart is Corrupt:
Who can say, ‘I have made my heart clean, I am pure from sin?’ Proverbs 20:9. No one; corruption crept into the heart of man from Eden, and since no one has done good.
God knows the corruption of the natural heart, for the Lord searches the heart and knows what goes on there (Jeremiah 17:9).
The Bible makes us understand that every man’s heart is corrupt. That is why we should clean our hearts, which can be done through the precious blood of Jesus Christ shed at Calvary. His blood is the only thing that can purge our hearts and wash us clean. - Access to His Presence:
A heart full of iniquity blocks God’s presence. To access Him, one must have a pure heart. As the Bible says, “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not heart me.” (Psalms 66:18)
We need to learn to have a pure heart. Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? And the response was: ” He who has clean hands and a pure heart; who has not lifted his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully” (Psalms 24: 3-4). - Love:
Love comes from a pure heart; a faulty heart that is not pure can’t love. Remember, the end of the commandments in 1 Timothy 1:5 is love out of a pure heart and a good conscience, and faith unfeigned.
How can you purify your heart?
One of God’s key desires is for our hearts to be purged and purified. We may wonder how we can rid our hearts of impurities. There are seven ways that we can be more effective and grow in purity.
- Repentant:
We all have regarded iniquity in our hearts in one way or another. But we have nothing to gain if we continue in sin. All human hearts are corrupt and full of evil, so we cannot purify them by our power. That is where we need God, the purifier of our hearts.
All we need to do is repent, for He loves us to the extent of giving His Son a remission of our sins. We must believe, repent, and forgive ourselves, and we will see our hearts purified in the precious blood of Jesus. - Study the word of God:
After you have repented of your sins, meditate on the word of God and spend time reading, studying, and digesting it to root out corruption within you and guide your heart toward Christ.
It will serve as a mirror to see where our thoughts and actions fail to align with Him. In His word, our hearts are guided and purified. - Observe your quiet time:
Take time to pray to God; this goes hand in hand with studying the word. After a thorough study of the word of God, we should take time to pour our hearts out to God in prayer. It will connect our hearts to Him, cleanse us, and encourage us to walk in His will. David pray for it you too can Psalms 51:10. - Purify your heart each day:
The things running through our minds can hinder the presence of God in our lives. Everything around us can pollute our minds if not properly guided. What can we do? We must Capture every impure thought that runs through our minds and hold on to the word of God.
Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water (Hebrews 10:22). - Checking the influences affecting your heart:
Let us be careful about whom we give our time and attention. We should disconnect ourselves from any friends, relatives, or gadgets that influence the purity of our hearts, for they can truncate God’s plan for our lives. - Seek help:
Iron sharpens iron. Fellowship with other believers will help us to grow in the truth of God’s word, seek to know God more, get answers to things disturbing our minds about faith, and live according to His purpose for our lives. Submit yourself to the Holy Spirit and godly counsel. - Following righteousness:
Flee every youthful lust and chase after righteousness, loving one another with a pure heart. To reign with Him when He appears, we must purify ourselves as He is pure (1 John 3:3).
